Updates:
SVSI is constructing a new school building as part of a project to address the critical infrastructural needs of the community and providing "Lunch at School" program to ensure the health condition of students. The existing building, significantly damaged by the 2015 earthquake, was no longer safe, with visible cracks highlighting the urgency of this initiative. Our goal is to complete the four-room school building which will prevent student dropouts and enhance the learning environment. The school used to operate in a temporary structure that poses serious risks to student safety. During periods of high wind or heavy rain, the school often had to close for days due to the unsafe and disruptive conditions, making it clear that a permanent solution is needed.
In addition to addressing immediate safety concerns, it has come to our attention that there is a growing need for a high school in the area. The local secondary school only provides education up to grade 8, forcing students to travel long distances—up to 3 hours—to attend grades 9 and 10 at Hattibang Secondary School. This is a significant factor in the high dropout rates after grade 8. SVSI aims to address this by eventually incorporating secondary classrooms into the proposed structure, ensuring that students can continue their education without the need for long travel.
The plan involves demolishing two of the existing eight classrooms and replacing them with four new ones, bringing the total number of classrooms to ten. Eight of these classrooms will serve students in grades 1-8, one will be designated for kindergarten/early childhood development, and the final room will be used as an office, which will also include a library. These improvements will ensure a safe and conducive learning environment, fostering educational growth in the Chepang community.
In addition, the new building is being designed with child-friendly features and equipped with WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities suitable for different genders and ages. This will assure parents that their children are learning in a safe and well-equipped school, which will further contribute to reducing dropout rates and increasing the overall education level in the community.
