SVSI distributed 1,600 citrus seedlings—1,100 orange and 500 lemon seedlings—to five rain communities in Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality. This initiative aims to increase local agricultural productivity and provide economic benefits to the region.
Oranges and lemons hold significant commercial value in Nepal's mid-hills. Oranges, typically harvested in winter, are highly profitable, selling for Rs 70-100 per kilo. The practice of wholesalers booking entire trees directly from farms underscores the fruit’s economic importance. Golden Lemons, known locally as Sun Kagati, are used year-round in households and restaurants, with each lemon fetching Rs 10. This makes lemon cultivation equally vital for the local economy and across the Indian subcontinent.
The distribution program reached 163 individuals across five areas: Tobang (43), Hattibang (34), Kaule (30), Chhapdada (33), and Ghurkesh (23). The initiative is expected to leverage the favorable altitude and geography of the region, which are well-suited for citrus farming, to enhance the livelihoods of local farmers and rain community beneficiaries.
